ABOUT THE ARTIST

Dr. Elaine Miles, PhD

Elaine Miles is an ancient glass artisan who has worked in installation, sculpture and performance art, exhibiting nationally and internationally for over two decades. She has maintained a solo practice as well as supporting numerous innovative and collaborative projects in Glass and Interdisciplinary Arts for over twenty the years. Miles specialises in ancient glass blowing techniques that date back to 4000BC.

Elaine's glass is currently on show in public and private collections in all states around Australia as well as in international collections. Those who have commissioned Elaine’s major exhibitions and performances include The Sydney Arts Festival, The National Museum of Singapore, wPS1 art radio (an affiliate of PS1 gallery/MOMA New York), Roulette

Experimental Sound Space (New York), Sculpture by the Sea (Sydney) and the Melbourne Recital Centre Inaugural opening. She has exhibited in various state run craft councils around Australia as well as at the National Glass Centre at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.

Elaine Miles holds a PhD in fine arts (glass) and today leads a team of industry glass blowing champions to create some of the most challenging and technically difficult pieces in Murrine. Her current series explores the narratives that surround ancient murrine glass, old fashioned embroidery, medieval forged metal and lost wax casting.

Reviews

"The pair acts out a highly synchronised and intuitively timed display of glass blowing, overlaying colour with colour, stretching, moulding, twisting and shaping with charred wooden wool, turning glass at the bench and plunging the work back into the furnace."
Anne-marie Kiely, Belle Magazine.

"The Venetian-style cane glass plates tinkle gently or chime like church bells, depending upon the strength of the breeze, and Miles doesn’t mind the work titled “Reflections’ being described as ‘feminine."
Adeline Chia, The Straits Times, Singapore.

"The highly reflective surfaces of the fragile glass in Elaine's installation, evoked a sense of enlightenment or revelation, the spiritual link between history and objects. How their presence ultimately evokes a sense of memory, re-collection, reanimation of that, which will remain forever absent."
Dr Julie Clarke, Honorary Fellow, The University of Melbourne.

"The central focus pivots around glass…and philosophical content is inspired by Eastern thought and Phenomenology. "
Emeritus Prof. Bernard Hoffert.
