ANCIENT AMPHORA SERIES
Large murrine vessels
on hand-forged stands
Dimensions approximately 650cm x 230cm

Summary:

Ancient murrine techniques were utilised by a highly skilled team of international and emerging artists. Ancient themes and philosophies underpin this unique and exclusive series.

Murrine (pronounced 'mure-een-ee') is a craft dating over 4000 years old and popularly adopted by the Venetians in the 16th century. This work is keeping precious craftsmanship alive.

Contemporary cross-sections of abstract details are found within an enlarged landscape. This is Elaine Miles' most prestigious appropriation of an early miniature ancient core-formed vessel. The past lays the groundwork for a path forward and a glimpse of what could have been or what might become viewed as ‘museum glass.’

Gallery:

Elaine Miles leads a team of skilled artists to make this series. Emerging artists assist her whilst she creates layer upon layer of coloured murrine cane. A large plate of murrine glass cubes are then formed into the prestigious amphora by international gaffer glass blowers Tom Rowney, Scott Chaseling and a team of six. Miles then wheel cuts the entire surface to a multi-faceted tactile textured detail on a glass lathe. Metal fabrication of the stands are by Bradley Jones and metal forging by Matthew St George.
